How to Fish… (A Work in Progress)

The purpose of this post is twofold:

1. I’m hoping fishing noobs stop by, click on a link they’re interested in and learn everything they need to know to fish whatever lure it is they want to use. Yes, they could just search on Google themselves, but they won’t. That’s what both fishing noobs and seasoned fishing veterans do, that would be too easy. Google isn’t a fishing site. Some would say, neither is this. But you would go to a fishing site for fishing information, not Google.

2. I’m hoping writers that are thinking of jotting down still another How To on fishing tubes (46,100,000 others beat you to it) or Float ‘N Flies (13,900,000 beat you to that one) will seriously reconsider their topic. I can’t imagine there’s anything new to say. I was shown how to rig a plastic worm once and I figured out how to do it endlessly from then on. I don’t think it’s necessary to show us/tell us again, the other half million or so did a fine job. Google what you’re thinking of writing a How To about. If there are more than 1,000 already done, think of something else. (I Googled “How to Fish a live Duckling” and didn’t find any. That would be a good topic to write about. “How to fish for Largemouth Bass with Possum Parts” turned up blank too). And in the off chance you were considering doing a comprehensive article on How To Fish a Prairie Dog, forget it. It’s been done.

Anyway, in no real order other than how they came to mind, here we go:

…Spinnerbaits. Google Search: About 2,190,000 results.

…Crankbaits. Google Search: About 2,880,000 results.

…Deep Diving Crankbaits. Google Search: About 63,600 results.

…Lipless Crankbaits. Google Search: About 431,000 results.

…Poppers. Google Search: About 3,790,000 results.

…Zara Spooks. Google Search: About 142,000 results.

…Swim Baits. Google Search: About 554,000 results.

…Swim Jigs. Google Search: About 631,000 results.

…a Jig and Twister. Google Search: About 829,000 results.

…Tubes. Google Search: About 46,100,000 results.

…Drop Shot Rigs. Google Search: About 885,000 results.

…a Float and Fly. Google Search: About 13,900,000 results.

…a Count Down Rapala. Google Search: About 132,000 results.

…a Floating Rapala. Google Search: About 831,000 results.

…a Plastic Worm. Google Search: About 579,000 results.

For now I’m going to stick with lures, presentations and how to use them for freshwater fish. I’ll be adding more to the list as I think of them. If anybody has a few they want to see listed, leave a comment. I’ll look them up and get them included. Maybe I’ll turn this post into a page so it becomes a constant reference source rather than getting lost in the list of blog posts.

I hope to expand this into other areas. One on the care and keeping of equipment, hunting, fly fishing, fly tying and whatever else comes to mind. Unless I get bored with the whole idea and give up.

  1. I don’t know if you use them but I like blade baits. They were my number 1 lure this past spring for catching fish.

    1. I’ll have to get that up here. I used to use those years ago, but lost a handful of them to toothy critters and never replaced them.

  2. that’s partially, a good partially, why I stopped writing about fly fishing. I said the little bit I had to say, and that was that.

    1. I remember having the conversation with you. Where you are now with what you’re doing on your Flickr site is so much better.

    1. I’ll get to that………

I believe I already have that up as a page 🙂

      1. I read a blog somewhere called fish the fox. Not much where info there. We like to be spoon fed us knee-ander-thawls.

        1. You do know there is a limited supply of smallies swimming around in the Fox. And they only go to very specific places. If people know where these places are, the Fox will be devoid of smallies in no time flat. Yeah, that’s right. I’m not kidding.

          1. People take the fish?

  3. I don’t think I’m alone in this belief: you should still guide…
Being that I have never wandered in the river too far from my car. If I try to find you and beg for some river wisdom my wife will be making out a missing person report and you will probably be the one that locates me. Hopefully not by smell! So if you want to share some of your wisdom (not that your writing hasn’t enriched me) then please contact me. thanks ever so much, bobf

    1. Sent you an email Bob.

The other comment was a tongue in cheek response to not giving out spots. A problem I don’t have.
Yes, people keep the fish, but nowhere near the quantity that some would have you believe. It’s a big river and I don’t run into many people. You would have to drag nets through the river and keep everything to have any real impact.

  4. … corn and marshmallows: about 2,060,000 results but further research finds that by around # 9,000 it’s pretty much all Indonesian porn.

    1. It would never even dawn on me to look that far. Things must be slow out your way Mr. Gordon.

Food groups may be a whole nuther page. Found out once that the best way to catch creek chubs was with a small hook and a hunk of beef jerky.
