I haven’t felt like writing much of anything lately.
I’ve also not been reading much of anything lately.
For all those with blogs that I usually read and leave comments, I don’t mean to be rude, but my head is filled with enough stuff and I’ve simply run out of room.
I’ve been out wandering around, doing a fair amount of fishing, finding what I think are cool things, taking what I think are interesting photos, but the words to describe all of this have piled up in my head and I can’t be bothered making sense of it all.
Maybe that’s for the better.
Don’t see this changing for the rest of the month, too nice out to be sitting around inside the house. Maybe I’ll get back in the swing of things come June, or not.
Till then, here’s a few shots of a cast iron frying pan I found next to a deteriorating stove out in the middle of nowhere. Literally, nowhere. Will follow up with more once the pan has been cleaned up, seasoned and put back to use.

17 May 2012I’ve been talking about it for months Gretchen. Tried to disappear over the winter, but that was a bit extreme.
I’ve done this before, lay a little lower and recharge the batteries. Much needed lately, been dealing with far too much information. Makes you wonder how much of it is really necessary.

17 May 2012For the past year or so, I have been telling my wife that I really want a cast iron pan. Apparently I need to go for a hike and get one. I also need to learn about this seasoning thing that I always hear in conjuction with cast iron cookware.

17 May 2012My wife grew up using them and we use them a lot for everything. Check out the local Salvation Army or Goodwill stores. No point buying new if you don’t have to. They do last forever, so even if you buy new they’ll outlast you.

18 May 2012That’s AWESOME Ken! What a find. I am a huge fan of cast iron cookware- actually most of my cooking is done in cast iron. It’s just so great. Nick- the seasoning thing isn’t so bad. The great thing is it’s the only cookware I know of that gets better each time you use it.
They are particularly suited to pan-frying things. I’ve got a pretty good recipe for cast iron crispy potatoes:

18 May 2012We have a whole set of pans that were dug out of my mother-in-laws mountain of crap that is supposedly near 100 years old. Includes a cast iron cupcake pan, which I find intriguing. Can’t decided whether to put them to use or on display. We already have quite a few working pieces.
We have a couple of pots I like to use for stews. Don’t know what makes it different, just does.

25 May 2012I’m enjoying kicking back Mari. Spent 4 days out camping without even the cell phone turned on. Got back and don’t feel like looking at or reading much. I should at least make an effort to get back in the swing of things. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. Then the moment passes and I go for a walk.

25 May 2012Spent the last few days out camping and cooking on nothing but a couple of cast iron frying pans. We eat well while camping and everything does taste a bit better.
Had my blue steel camp coffee pot going quite a bit too. Nothing like the sound of percolating in the morning. Coffee for me, tea for the wife. The animals don’t know what they’re missing.
