First Sunset of 2016

First Sunset of 2016

All afternoon I toyed with the idea of going out to one of my usual spots for the first sunset of 2016.

Ventures out had me wondering how smart that would be. Cold penetrates differently now and my bones don’t react well to the cold. I don’t particularly like being stiff and sore.

Besides, glances out the windows had me wondering if it was going to be any big deal. Lots of clouds, no real sun light. The makings of a dud.

Got that one completely wrong.

I happen to be out as the sun set anyway and I always carry my point and shoot in my pocket. The sky was lit up and in order to capture it at that moment would have meant stopping the car in the middle of the road and abandoning it as I scurried around looking for an ideal spot to stand.

Didn’t think that was a good idea.

By the time I got to a safe spot to park the car, which was a matter of a couple of minutes, the light show had already been cut in half. I scurried over to a good spot and did what I could with the cheap camera and lowering light.

Results aren’t great, but I got something.

One of my other fascinations is with light reflecting on water.

The river is high and flowing fast and with the low light I knew there would be some blur to the image no matter how it turned out. The end result would be, or could be, a pleasant surprise.

I’m pleased.

  1. I’d say you were successful with those two photographs. Beautiful. I really enjoy how the sky reflects on the water. We’ll done.

    1. The light on the water was much better than what was going on in the sky Justin, but I felt compelled to try to get the sky.
Should have spent a little more time looking down.

  2. The sunset is perfect Ken! Really good for a point and shoot. Now about the other picture…where were you in 68? Did you drink that koolaid? Just kidding. It sort of reminded me of a trip I took once.

    1. Buried throughout a number of stories are hints about that Howard, but I was only 12 in ’68, so the reference would be more for the early ’70’s.

The point and shoot actually does a pretty good job, but low light situations are a challenge. A tripod would probably help, but I tend to be too lazy to haul one around.

And now that I know a bit more about you from that time period Howard, maybe, just maybe I can cause a flashback or two for you 🙂

  3. Great shots as always. Still love reading the old wading posts when winter weather keeps us out of the water. ….

    1. Thanks Andy. Been toying with the idea of going into my archives to look for old stories that I still enjoy. Maybe put up an archives page here on the site. My first story/post dates back to 1998, a couple of years after I started fishing the Fox. I guess I’ve been writing things down for awhile. Probably explains why I run out of words at times.

  4. A life expressed in many ways through a collection of sunsets and light reflected on water. Should be large images on walls in rooms devoted to meditation and contemplation.

    1. Many years ago I had a couple of shows where I did installations Bob. Took over whole rooms. I tend to still think that way, which is why my individual shots I think are nice, but hanging alone on a wall is not how I picture them being displayed.

The last couple of years I’ve been playing more and more with the abstract qualities of light and nature.
And big, ugly, potentially violent storms of course…
