A Slight Shift in the Season

Today I could see, feel and smell a slight shift in the season.

Meteorologically after all, summer is two thirds of the way to being over.

I sit outside on my daily half hour lunch break.

I couldn’t help but notice today that the sun is slightly lower in the sky and the shadows are slightly longer.

The feel and smell are harder to describe.

The wind is both warm and cool.

For as much vegetation that is still growing, just as much is starting to die off.

I can smell that musty odor of decay.

This slight shift in the season is fine by me.

Fall is my favorite time of year and if it starts a little early, I can live with that.

As long as it doesn’t end too soon and winter sets in too early.

Sorry to all for not getting around reading and commenting on your blogs.
Sorry for not responding to comments here on the little I’ve put up this summer.
I’m approaching 20 minutes of sitting here doing this.
That’s enough.
Time to head back outside.

It’s Lunch Time my Friend 9.8.11

I didn’t have time to put one up last week and over the last couple of weeks people have been writing like crazy. This is going to be one of those times where you just go to the site, start at the top and work your way down. Sit back, relax, nibble on your lunch and enjoy.

Quill Gordon out in Vermont got nailed pretty good by Irene. If nothing else, read the second one on the list, After Irene.

The View from Fish in a Barrel Pond

My friend Bob Long, Jr. has been manipulating photo’s and writing out on the South Side of Chicago. Always worth a peek and a read.

Erin out in Colorado, worth reading every word. Always is.

Mysteries Internal

Owl Jones is, well, Owl Jones. You just have to wade through them. Some of the funniest stuff out there. If the outdoors could be funny.

Owl Jones

Mike’s been recapping his trip out west and they’re all worth reading. And the pictures are worth a peek.

Mike’s Gone Fishin’… Again

Even if you don’t hunt, this group of writers is worth a read.

Lastly, you gotta eat. Everyone likes to eat. I’ll bet you never thought of half this stuff though.

The 3 Foragers

All right, that’s it. Go back to work.

Why, look at that, it is almost lunch time.

The summer doldrums seem to be coming to an end. In the past week all the writers have come back to life and have been typing away like crazy. Others have been out taking picture of damn near everything.

This is a tough one.

We’ll start with Dale Bowman from the Sun Times wondering about how an outdoor writer winds up with only 1 out of 4 kids taking to the outdoors naturally.

6-year-old is a Natural

Bob Maciulis, publisher of Outdoor Notebook, also writes for Aurora’s Beacon News. He recently did a nice write up on our local waterways.

Rivers are the Lifeblood of Illinois

Bob Long, Jr.’s photos and words continue to be intriguing.

This is where all writing and photographing hell broke loose. I think the best I can do is make it a little easier on you. You won’t have to go over to my sidebar and start clicking on things. Just go down this list.

The links will take you to the sites, then just start reading, looking and scrolling down. Some real gems here. Reading, looking, fishing, hunting and wandering around are all pretty well covered.

There’s a good chance you won’t get through them all today, so hang onto this for the next couple of days. Will give you something to do on those lunch breaks.

A Rural Journal

I know, I know, I dumped a lot on you this week.

Don’t blame me, I’m not the one doing all the writing and photo’s. Okay, maybe some of it.

Doesn’t mean you have to go read them all in one hour. You know you can’t go surfing all afternoon, the IT guys do monitor your keystrokes you know. So just save it for the next few days, take your time and savor what’s here.

Will be worth it in the long run.

You’ll have to excuse my own lack of posts lately, I’ve been busy.

This week it’s time to quit reading the stories of others and start making plans for your own.

Instead of sitting around bemoaning the fact that summer is almost over, rejoice in the fact that there could still be over two months of decent weather left. Time to get in a canoe and go for a drift.

Of course I’m partial to the Fox River.

The lower reaches of the Fox can be stunningly beautiful. The further down stream you get from Aurora the fewer people you see. And as I like to say, at that point You Could be Anywhere.

Start making plans now, or don’t make plans and just give the following shops a call on a whim. They may have canoes or kayaks available. However you do it, you should go.

Paddle and Trail of Aurora

Geneva Kayak Center/Yorkville Outdoor Center

Freeman Sports

Ayers Landing

These are the ones I know and like. I’m sure there are others if you’re partial to the northern reaches of the Fox. You’ll have to do your own research though.

If you’re interested in other rivers, the Des Plaines, DuPage, Kankakee, Kishwaukee… that’s why God made Google. Plug in a name and see what comes up.

A trip down a river via canoe is always worth it. If timed right, a fall color trip will have you making up your own stories.

Get out, get out, get out.

And if you really do need a dose of good writing, the bloggers have been busy. The ones I read are all in the column to the right. You know the routine.

I’ve been getting a number of notices about posts going up, but my time has been limited and I’ve only been able to check out a few.

If there’s not enough here for you today, you can always just go to my blog lists in the right hand column and click on anything. With the nicer weather, you may want to go check out the food blogs. Do some outdoor cooking or, heaven forbid, turn the stove on in the house.

We”ll start off with Quill Gordon today out in the Great Northeast.

Away From It All

Swing out to Colorado to see what’s up with Erin.

Sore Mouths

Down to the Carolinas’ where Mike is recapping his fishing trip out west. Just go there and start reading from the top down. Some cool photo’s.

Mike’s Gone Fishin’…Again

And of course around Chicago is Bob Long, Jr. He’s been busy putting up a few things this past week. May as well start from the top there too.

Hopefully some time will free up over the next week and I’ll have some new faces up here. But it’s always nice to have reliable sources.

I don’t get tired of them.
