The Geneva Kayak Center is opening shop in Yorkville with the announcement of their soon to open Yorkville Outdoor Center. I was initially somewhat skeptical about the success of this adventure, but I had the opportunity to speak with Scott Fairty the General Manager the other day and I was impressed by their plans.
I’m looking forward to having them so close to my house, it’s only a 3 minute walk.
April 1st weekend is their grand opening events and I plan on being down there for quite a bit of it.
I had already done one write up on this where some of my skepticism comes out.
I have a feeling I’ll be doing a few more write ups on this. I’m expecting this to be a success. As a rabid wading angler, any attention brought to the river by one group can benefit us all.
There is still work to be done around the chute to get the area looking good, including a bridge over the chute to the new man made island. This will be a boon for anglers that still want to fish at the dam. Fishing in the chute will be off limits, as it should be, but access to that island will benefit those that need to fish the south side of the dam.
If you can make it to the opening events, look for me. I’ll be the idiot with the camera standing on the rocks as far into the chute as they’ll let me go trying to take pictures of kayakers.
I should probably ask for permission first. Which would be rare for me.

17 Mar 2011I haven’t heard anything. I’ll be bugging the mayor at the grand opening in a couple of weeks. They’ve done pretty much nothing over the winter. Lots of clean up to do yet.
