I knew this was going to happen.
After the yard flooding torrential down pours and the lightning hitting the neighborhood trees finally departed, I pried open the shipping tube.
Perused through a couple of the written things quickly, put together the rod and reel and pulled out some line.
Second cast, 40 feet right where I wanted it.
I was stunned.
After a few minutes of annoying my wife, using her as a target by hitting her with the line as she walked around the yard 40-50 feet out, I tried the dreaded roll cast.
This is something I can’t do with my other 3 fly rods and I must do on the creeks I fish.
Perfect to 30 feet on the first try and all subsequent attempts.
Stunned again.
I have a very slow, deliberate, methodical way of fishing with my spinning gear.
Fly fishing friends say I use it like a fly rod.
I now know why I only use fly rods a couple of times a year.
I now know what they’re shortcomings are.
It’s me.
I’m built for bamboo…

5 Aug 2012Ha! I like a man that can own up to his shortcomings…I have to do it all the time. Enjoy your time with the cane.

5 Aug 2012I don’t do it often Howard, so don’t get used to it 🙂
Had it out on the river today. Was doing well till the wind started blowing in my face. Cutting that wind is a bitch. Something else to learn I guess.

5 Aug 2012Ken,
I’m glad I’m not the only one who likes to target the wife or daughter with a cast fly line while they’re walking around the yard and trying to work. Another neat trick is to tease the cats with a vibrating rod tip over their heads, but don’t try that with brand new cane!

5 Aug 2012Walt, I wound up getting hosed, but it was hotter than hell out so I think I got the better end of the deal.
I still may tease the squirrels with a peanut on the line…
The rod will remain away from the cats. The world is there scratching post and I’m sure they would love the feel of that bamboo.

5 Aug 2012That’s one thing I forgot about- that rod is a roll-casting machine. It’s also a tip wrapping machine, but that’s another matter.

5 Aug 2012Got a pretty good taste of both of those today. Especially the tip wrapping. At 5′ 9″ I don’t have the longest arms in the world. Got a bit annoying…
