Through blogs and social media we make friends and acquaintances that we have never, and may never, meet.
Through my involvement with Outdoor Blogger Network over the past two years I’ve got to know Steve Zakur who writes the blog Sipping Emergers.
I knew Steve lived in Connecticut, but gave it no more thought. I was visiting his blog to read about his fishing adventures and look at his photography. That’s all I needed to know.
On December 15, 2012 he put up a post simply called No Light. His kids, now in Middle and High School, went to Sandy Hook Elementary School. Knowing that before December 14th wouldn’t have mattered. Now is different.
Today he put up a post called Introduction: The Next Five Days. As he says:
For the next five days I will hijack my own soap box. I am going to go off topic and discuss something that has been on my mind lately – the role of firearms in our society.
I wrote a couple of things over the past month on the topic of guns and I’ve gone back and forth on just how much more I want to write about it. In my head, it’s considerable. After seeing today’s post by Steve, I’ve decided to pass along what he has to say. I’ll let him do the talking. I want to hear what he has to say. Opinions coming from someone that has friends and neighbors immediately affected by what happened on December 14th has to have more meaning than anything I can come up with.
We’ll see.
In today’s post, Steve outlines the topics he’ll be discussing over the next five days. I have no clue what those posts say and I don’t know if I’m going to agree or disagree with what he has to say, but I’m going to pass it along regardless. If I want to engage in a conversation with him about any of it, then I’ll be doing that over on Sipping Emergers.
For the next five days, or whatever day he puts them up, I’ll be passing along the links. I think it’s a rare opportunity to hear the voice of someone close to a devastating tragedy and I think that voice needs to be heard.
