I gave up on morel hunting this year.
For over a decade while out creek hopping and wandering through the woods in the spring, I scoured the woods looking for morels. Everything I ever read about them or heard others talk about them told me that they should be where I’m wandering.
It never happened. I never found a morel.
So I gave up this year.
A couple of weeks ago I even made the crack that now, of course, I’ll find one.
Of course, that’s what happened.
The first one I nearly stepped on in an area where I would never have purposely looked for them.
Not five minutes later I glance at the base of a tree I’m walking past and see more.
I mean, really, what are the chances of this happening.
All those years of wandering around, walking around hundreds of trees in ever widening circles and never finding a thing.
If I knew finding them would be this easy, I would have given up looking for them years ago.

17 May 2014My question is why were you looking for them?
Ken G
17 May 2014Fried them up in butter and some garlic Howard. Had them with some scrambled eggs and sausage links.
Never had them before so didn’t know what to expect.
They were exceptional. I could see how they go with any kind of fish or wild game.
Problem is, I don’t know if I want to spend another decade being frustrated looking.

17 May 2014I love morels! Morel season is the time that fishing has to wait, since those little beauties are only around a couple of weeks then gone again for another year. Congrats on your first find! You’re hooked now for sure!

17 May 2014You would think they’d pop up year round Pam. Cool wet weather and they sprout.
Wonder what it is about only spring.

17 May 2014It’s funny how it sometimes works, Ken, years of nothing, then suddenly WHAM. Everywhere. That’s happened with me before, in other situations. I’ve made half-hearted attempts to find morels for decades and have never been successful. Maybe tomorrow I won’t look for any and find some for the very first time.
Ken G
17 May 2014I’m trying to not get too excited about it Walt. I don’t want to start another decades long bout of nothing.
Toying with the idea of going for wild asparagus on Sunday, that’s a sure thing. Only reason I haven’t done it yet is that there’s no fishable water nearby. Have to multitask on these searches to keep them from being too disappointing.

17 May 2014It was good to run into you Dick. I think the look was more flabbergasted and dumbfounded.
One of these days I’ll figure out how to find them when I’m actually looking for them.

18 May 2014I have never had any luck myself. Nice haul.

18 May 2014I wandered around the area after finding those, of course, that was it.
I think this was just a fluke Dan, but I’ll take it.

18 May 2014I love this line: “If I knew finding them would be this easy, I would have given up looking for them years ago.” We don’t have them down here, but I”ve always wanted to try one.

18 May 2014They’re delicious Jim. A friend and his kids went to a spot today that I showed him. I’ve scoured the area the last two years but haven’t found any. He hit the mother load of morels. That figures. Was talking to another friend. We think it’s the cool, wet weather we’ve been having that’s causing the recent explosion of them.

19 May 2014Too true, I was just hiking the other day and the morels popped out at me, and once I started looking they all must have returned to their underground lairs. Those are some gorgeous finds!

19 May 2014It’s what’s for dinner tonight Denise. A friend gave me more. One of these days I’ll stumble across one that don’t hide from me.
